The Rose City Pride Bands

Rose City Pride Bands presents, Rosea Triangulum, for wind symphony and chorus, by LGBTQ composer Randall Standridge, and sponsored in part by a grant from the Jon Sims Endowment Fund.

The theme of this commission is a requiem mass. In honor of the LGBTQ victims of the holocaust, we are reclaiming the pink triangle. This large-scale work combines the voices of our local LGBTQ Choral groups in a celebration of the progress we have made, while also recognizing the work still to be done.

The Rose City Pride Bands is proud to announce the winner of our Third Annual Young Artist Solo Competition. The competition was open to all 10th-12th grade band students throughout the tri-county area and SW Washington. Sexual orientation or gender identity were not factors in the selection process.

Introducing Kellen Ko:  a senior band student of Bobby Rathbone at Westview High School in Beaverton, Oregon. Kellen currently studies under Corrie Cook, who has been influential to their growth as a musician. Kellen is the principal flutist of the Westview Wind Ensemble, the Drum Major of the Westview Marching Band, and the Upright Bassist for Westview’s Jazz 1. They have also performed with the Beaverton School District Honor Band, the Western International Band Clinic, and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony’s Symphony Orchestra. Kellen plans to study music education in college and work with underserved student populations in the future.

Kellen will be performing the first movement of Flute Concerto in D by Carl Reinecke with the Rose City Wind Symphony on Friday, May 29 at 7:30 at Lincoln Hall on the Portland State University campus.  They will be awarded a $500 scholarship at the performance.
